November is National Diabetes Awareness Month, a time to shine a light on a disease that affects millions of people worldwide. At the St. Cloud Area Family YMCA, we believe in empowering individuals to take control of their health and well-being. That’s why we’re dedicated to raising awareness about the risks of type 2 diabetes and providing practical tips to help prevent it.
What is Type 2 Diabetes?
According to cdc.gov, about 1 in 10 Americans have diabetes, and 90% – 95% of them have type 2 diabetes.
Type 2 diabetes occurs when the body becomes resistant to insulin, a hormone that helps regulate blood sugar levels. Over time, this resistance can lead to high blood sugar levels, which can damage organs and tissues. This article from Mayo Clinic does a great job explaining symptoms, causes, and more.
Tips to Lower Your Risk
Making a few key adjustments to your daily routine can have a big impact on your health. Here are four tips to get started:
- Eat More Fruits and Veggies: Increase your intake of fresh fruits and vegetables, which are rich in fiber, vitamins, and minerals. They help stabilize blood sugar levels and provide essential nutrients your body needs to function.
- Choose Lean Proteins: Incorporating lean proteins like chicken, turkey, tofu, or fish into your meals can help balance blood sugar levels and promote healthy weight management.
- Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of water is crucial for overall health and can help prevent dehydration, which can affect blood sugar control.
- Get Active: Regular exercise helps improve your body’s ability to use insulin. Aim for at least 150 minutes of physical activity per week—whether it’s walking, swimming, or joining on of the YMCA’s group exercise classes.
