In St. Cloud, we look out for one another. We share hotdish recipes, we cheer for the Huskies, and we help shovel each other’s driveways.

But this February, the most important way we can show up for our neighbors is by taking care of our own hearts.

Heart disease hits home for many of us in the St. Cloud area, but at the YMCA, we’re making ‘heart health’ feel less like a chore and more like a community celebration.

1. Get Moving:

Even when it’s ten below outside, being active every day is the best gift for your heart. When it’s a bit too cold and snowy outside, head inside to the Y!

Try these local favorites to get your heart rate up:

  • Pickleball: Join the fastest-growing community in St. Cloud for some friendly competition.
  • Group Exercise: From TRX to cycling, there’s a spot for you in our studios.

2. Rest up:

Did you know that lack of sleep is linked to high blood pressure? Aim for seven to nine hours of shut-eye.

With the sun setting in the middle of the day in the winter, it’s the perfect time to start a cozy bedtime routine.

3. Revamp your Recipes:

You don’t have to give up flavor to stay healthy! Try swapping the salt in your hotdish for pepper or olive oil. Next time you’re shopping at Coborn’s or Aldi, grab some low-fat yogurt instead of sour cream. Opt for broths with reduced sodium. Your heart will thank you.

If you need some help getting started, the St. Cloud Area Family YMCA offers personalized nutrition plans!

4. Check your Pressure:

Nearly half of all adults have high blood pressure, and many don’t even know it.

Monitoring your blood pressure and keeping those numbers in check is a total game-changer for preventing strokes.

5. Quality Time:

Heart health isn’t just about cardio; it’s about connection! Laughter and social time lower stress. Whether you’re meeting friends for a group class or a cup of coffee at Kinder, those bonds keep your heart happy and healthy.

Let’s get out there, embrace the crisp winter air, and show our hearts some love this February!
