Carve Out Personal Time this Summer

Summer is here, and while those sunny days and extra family time are wonderful, having the kids home 24/7 can also be a bit…intense. As parents in the St. Cloud area, we all know the juggling act. Between splash pad trips, backyard BBQs, and endless snack requests, finding a moment for yourself can feel impossible. But guess what? It’s not! You deserve a break, and it’s actually good for the whole family when you take one. So, let’s talk about carving out a little “me time” this summer.

Sneak in Those Short Breaks

Think you need hours to recharge? Think again! Even a few minutes can make a difference.

  • Grab a quick cup of coffee and sit on the porch while the kids play in the yard.
  • Take a 10-minute walk around the block while they’re occupied.
  • Use naptime as YOUR time, not just a time to catch up on chores.

These small moments add up and help you reset throughout the day.

Child Care Swap

Remember, you’re not alone! Chat with family members, friends, or other parents in the St. Cloud area community.

  • Consider a childcare swap. You watch their kids for a few hours one day, and they watch yours another.
  • Ask a family member if they can take the kids for an afternoon.

It’s amazing what a few hours of solo time can do for your spirit.

Encourage Independent Play and Quiet Time

This one takes a little practice, but it’s a game-changer.

  • Set up a “quiet time” in the afternoon where everyone reads, draws, or plays quietly in their own space.
  • Create a space where kids can explore and play freely without constant supervision.
  • Have a list of activities they can do on their own, like puzzles or building blocks.

It’s good for their independence and gives you a much-needed breather.

BONUS: Use the Kid Zone

While you enjoy some time to yourself, attending a group exercise class, playing a game of pickleball, or just reading a book in the lobby, your kid can play in a safe, supervised space for up to 2 hours. Did we mention there’s a big, indoor playground as well?

You’ve Got This!

Remember, taking time for yourself isn’t selfish; it’s necessary. When you’re recharged, you’re a better parent, partner, and person. So, this summer, give yourself permission to step away, even if just for a little while. You’re doing a fantastic job, St. Cloud parents! And we at the YMCA are here to support you every step of the way.

Let’s have a great summer, together!
